Oktoberfest officially began on Samstag, den 21. September!
Originally, Oktoberfest was a celebration of the Hochzeit (weddding) of King Ludwig I and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. The citizens of München were invited to attend the festivities held in the fields in front of the gates of the city to celebrate. Today those fields are known as the Theresienwiese (Theresa’s meadow), or as the locals say, the Wies’n.
Today, Oktoberfest is visited by over 6 million people and is the world’s largest fair.
