First, you have not already completed your FLAND Essay, finish it and upload it to me (bottom of the FLAND Essay page.)
Narrative Past Tense of Modals – This could be challenging, but it’s worth a shot!
AATG National German Exam Practice – Listening and Viewing – This is the new National German Exam. The practice exam online is currently available as a level 2 exam, but it gives you a chance to practice some of the skills we are familiar with. (Try to complete at least questions 1-24 today).
With the remaining time, you may use the Rosetta Stone program found on the lab computers (see the instruction sheet, if needed).

After you have uploaded the essay, practice with the Rosetta Stone. (Follow the instructions below, or use the handout.)
ACHTUNG! Headphones and a microphone should be used with the Rosetta Stone.

Open the Rosetta Stone: (Log in as jhsguest)
1. Click “German Software” on the computer Desktop. (The icon looks like a German flag.)
2. Open the “Rosetta Stone v3” folder.
3. Double-click the blue “Rosetta Stone Version 3” icon.
4. Select Jens if you are a “Junge”, and Tara if you are a “Mädchen”.
5. At the next screen, choose Level 2 or Level 3. (Suggested: German 3 – Level 2, German 4 – Level 3)
FLAND Essay Contest 2014
2014 FLAND Essay theme:
“Don’t Let Learning a Language Slip Through Your Fingers!”
Write a short essay telling why you think it is important to learn a foreign language.
Contest Rules:
- The essay is to be written in English.
- It must be typed, double-spaced and no more than 300 words in length.
- The student should set the margins and font to fit the essay onto one page.
- The essay must have a cover page that contains the student’s name, grade, school, and language teacher’s full name. This information should not be on the essay itself.
- The essays will be judged using the following criteria:
- USE OF THEME,
- development of ideas,
- originality, organization,
- word choice,
- vocabulary, grammar and mechanics.
- Students will be divided into two divisions according to their grades.
- Division I: 8/9th and 10th graders.
- Division II: 11th and 12th graders.
Use your full name as the filename for your essay when you save it.
(Save it as: firstname lastname.doc)
Submit your essay as a Microsoft Word document using the upload feature on herrmick.com!
Three cash prizes will be awarded in each division:
1st place — $25
2nd place –$15
3rd place — $10
